Emergency Dental Services We Offer

At Simply Smiles, we provide immediate treatment for a wide range of dental emergencies, ensuring fast relief and effective care to get you back to feeling like yourself again.

  • Damaged or Lost Dental Restorations

It is important to replace any damaged or lost dental restorations—such as crowns, bridges, or fillings—as soon as possible to avoid further discomfort or structural damage. Exposed teeth can be highly sensitive, and delaying care could lead to a dental emergency involving severe pain or infection. Our team can provide you with temporary or permanent replacements that restore your smile's function and appearance seamlessly.

  • Treatment for Abscesses

Dental abscesses are infections that form at the root of a tooth or between the gums and teeth. These can cause severe pain, swelling, fever, and a bad taste in the mouth. If left untreated, the infection can spread, turning a manageable issue into a life-threatening one. Our team will drain the abscess, prescribe antibiotics to stop the infection, and provide follow-up care to restore your oral health.

  • Traumatic Dental Injuries

Whether from sports injuries, auto accidents, or unexpected falls, traumatic dental injuries require immediate attention. A broken tooth, dislodged tooth, or soft tissue damage must be addressed quickly to prevent long-term damage. Our emergency care protocol ensures quick stabilization and treatment, improving the chances of full recovery and the preservation of your natural teeth.

What To Do In a Dental Emergency

Being prepared for a dental emergency is just as important as knowing who to call. Follow these steps to manage common dental emergencies until you can get to our office. If you can’t there are other options.

KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH

Getting treatment as soon as possible is important when a tooth gets knocked out. Replacing the tooth within 30 minutes will greatly increase the chances of saving it.

If the tooth is still in your mouth and partially attached:
Leave it in place and come in immediately. Do not try to remove it.

If the tooth is completely knocked out:

  • 1. Handle the tooth carefully

Always pick the tooth up by the crown (the enamel), not the root.

  • 2. Rinse with clean water

If dirty, gently rinse with plain water—avoid soap, and never scrub.

  • 3. Replace tooth in its socket if possible

If possible, gently insert the tooth back into its socket.

  • 4. Keep tooth moist

Cover the tooth with milk or use a dental preservation kit available at any pharmacy. Or place the tooth in your mouth next to your cheek.

  • 5. Call us right away and come in immediately!

Come see Dr. Sabharwal within 30 minutes, or as soon as you can get here. Call us at (703) 858-3456 so we can be prepared to assist you right away when you arrive.

  • 6. After office hours, go to an emergency room

Most other dental emergencies can wait until the next day when our office is open, but for traumatic injuries that knock a tooth out or push it out of place, go to the emergency room for treatment if the emergency occurs outside of our normal office hours.

CHIPPED OR BROKEN TEETH

A broken tooth can cause sharp edges, bleeding, and severe pain. If you’re bleeding, apply gauze to the area. Use a cold compress over your cheek to reduce swelling. Call our office and visit us immediately for treatment.

TOOTHACHES

Severe pain from a toothache can stem from infection, decay, trauma, or even sinus pressure. Until you’re evaluated, avoid putting aspirin directly on the gums, and instead rinse with warm salt water. Dr. Sabharwal will examine the area to determine the cause and provide fast relief.

Remember, being prepared for an emergency will help you take the right actions when an emergency happens. Keep our office number handy and call us at  whenever you need emergency dental treatment.

The Importance Of Getting Treatment As Soon as Possible

Timely treatment during a dental emergency is critical. Waiting can result in serious and often irreversible consequences. Here’s why acting fast matters:

  • Preventing Complications

Ignoring a dental emergency can allow infections to spread, lead to gum disease, or result in the loss of teeth. Acting quickly helps prevent tooth extractions, additional procedures, and serious health risks.

  • Pain Relief

Dental pain can be debilitating. Our team will work to identify the source of your severe pain and offer prompt solutions so you can return to normal life without discomfort.

  • Preserving Teeth

Injuries like a broken tooth or a knocked-out tooth require fast action. The longer you delay treatment, the lower the chance of saving the tooth. We specialize in preserving your natural smile whenever possible.

  • Preventing Further Damage

A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth may not seem serious at first but can worsen with time. Addressing the issue promptly reduces the risk of nerve damage, infection, and the need for complex restorative work down the line.

Common Signs You’re Having a Dental Emergency

Recognizing a dental emergency early can help you take the right steps before the situation worsens. Call us immediately if you experience:

  • Severe pain in your tooth, jaw, or gums
  • A broken tooth, especially with exposed nerves or bleeding
  • Swelling in the face, gums, or neck area
  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop with pressure
  • Loose or knocked-out teeth due to trauma
  • Visible abscess or pus discharge near the gumline
  • A sudden bad taste or odor in the mouth, signaling infection

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Emergencies

  • What qualifies as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency includes any oral health issue that requires immediate care to alleviate severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Common examples include a knocked-out tooth, dental abscess, broken tooth, or uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth. If you're ever unsure, it's best to call our office so we can assess your situation.

  • Should I go to the ER or the dentist for a dental emergency?

In most cases, contacting a dentist is the best first step. Our team at Simply Smiles is trained to handle urgent dental issues like abscesses, damaged restorations, or trauma from accidents. However, if you have facial swelling that affects breathing, experience head trauma, or have uncontrollable bleeding, go directly to the nearest emergency room first. We can follow up with dental care after you're stabilized.

  • How do I know if my toothache is serious?

Toothaches vary in intensity, but if you’re experiencing severe pain that doesn’t go away with over-the-counter medication or keeps you from sleeping, eating, or functioning normally, it may be a sign of infection or nerve damage. Call us right away for an evaluation.

  • What should I do if I have a broken tooth?

A broken tooth can expose nerves and make you more susceptible to infection or further damage. Rinse your mouth gently, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and contact our office as soon as possible. Avoid chewing on the damaged side and try to save any tooth fragments if they’ve broken off.

  • Can I wait a few days if I'm in pain?

It’s not advisable to delay treatment during a dental emergency, especially when you're in severe pain. Even if the symptoms seem manageable, the underlying issue may worsen. Acting quickly can reduce complications, prevent infection, and in many cases, save your natural tooth.
