WHAT IS A DENTAL BRIDGE?

Fortunately for our patients, dental bridges are nowhere near as complicated as those you’ll find in San Francisco and Brooklyn. Rather, a dental bridge is a prosthetic that can be used to replace a single tooth or a few teeth missing in a row. With it, we can make several positive impacts on your smile:
  • Restore your smile’s appearance
  • Enhance your ability to chew and speak properly
  • Maintain the alignment of your teeth
  • Make sure your bite is evenly distributed
  • Prevent the teeth from shifting into the open space
A dental bridge is comprised of 2 dental crowns attached to a prosthetic tooth or teeth. The crowns are placed around the healthy teeth surrounding the gap in a person’s smile, and the prosthetic fills in the space. If a patient does not have enough healthy dental structure to support a traditional bridge, that's no problem because we can use dental implants to restore the surrounding teeth.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE LIKE?

Depending on your particular situation, the time it can take for you to get a bridge can vary. If you don’t require dental implants, we can design and place a bridge in as little as two appointments. With dental implants, however, the process can take a few months because the implants have to be placed into your jaw, and you’ll need time to heal before a bridge can be placed. Your dentist in Ashford will discuss both of these options so you can determine which one is the best for you.

If you don’t require implants, the procedure will begin with your dentist shaping the teeth surrounding your missing ones so they can properly fit the crowns, and then an impression will be taken. This will be used to design your bridge, and it will be sent to a local dental lab. We’ll fit you with a temporary one while it is being made. Once it is completed, you’ll return to our office to have it placed into your mouth. After checking the fit and making sure your bite is aligned, you’re all done!
