You never know ahead of time when you or someone in your family will chip a tooth, or have an accident that knocks out a tooth. But you can be prepared to take the proper steps for handling an emergency when one comes up. Knowing in advance what to do will help you overcome any panic.

KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH

Getting treatment as soon as possible is important when a tooth gets knocked out. Replacing the tooth within 30 minutes will greatly increase the chances of saving it.


If the tooth is still in your mouth, partially attached, leave it in there. That’s the best place for it to be until you can get to the dentist. If the tooth is completely knocked out, follow these steps:

  • 1. Handle the tooth carefully

    Pick the tooth up by the enamel—you want to avoid touching the root end with your fingers.

  • 2. Rinse with clean water.

    If the tooth has dirt on it, carefully wash it with clean water. DO NOT use soap to clean the tooth, just rinse the dirt off. DO NOT dry the tooth with anything.

  • 3. Replace tooth in its socket if possible

    If you can push the tooth back into its socket, do so. This is the best place for your tooth to be until you get to the dentist.

  • 4. Keep tooth moist

    Cover the tooth with milk or use a dental preservation kit available at any pharmacy. Or place the tooth in your mouth next to your cheek.

  • 5. Call us right away and come in immediately!

  • 6. After office hours, go to an emergency room

    Most other dental emergencies can wait until the next day when our office is open, but for traumatic injuries that knock a tooth out or push it out of place, go to the emergency room for treatment if the emergency occurs outside of our normal office hours.

CHIPPED OR BROKEN TEETH

If you have bleeding, you can apply pressure to the area using gauze to help stop the bleeding. To help with swelling and pain, apply a cold pack to your cheek or lip over the affected area. Call our office at  (703) 858-3456 and come in for emergency treatment.

TOOTHACHES

Toothaches can be caused by a number of different dental problems. When you have severe tooth pain, the best thing to do is contact us right away so Dr. Sabharwal can examine your teeth and diagnose the cause of your pain.
